Protection for birds
EDITOR:
Birds are a treasured part of the Upper Peninsula’s natural diversity and beauty. Addressing climate change and protecting our beautiful natural resources will help ensure that they can thrive across Michigan for generations to come.
One important opportunity is community solar, which creates opportunities for Michiganders and businesses to choose where their electricity is guaranteed, helping to reduce energy costs and drive savings. Senate Bill 152, would create Michigan’s first community solar project — a win both for our communities and our wildlife.
Every year, vulnerable birds like the Golden-Winged Warbler come to the Upper Peninsula to nest. Two provisions in the proposed Michigan state budget would help ensure their protection, including $2 million for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to acquire and conserve wetlands and $10 million to help local municipalities restore and conserve wetlands before flooding events occur.
Thank you, State Senator Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan), State Representative Dave Prestin (R-Cedar River) and State Representative Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) for meeting with me at Audubon Great Lakes’ recent Advocacy Day to discuss solutions that will protect our state’s natural resources and wildlife.
