Letter response

EDITOR:

Michael Glass’s recent letter to the editor (May 19) is an equal-opportunity offender. Each paragraph manages to say something derogatory and/or diametrically opposed to the reality of what is happening. Let me elaborate:

Paragraph one talks about the need for deliberations in decision making. Has Mr. Glass been watching or attending the meetings? Time and time again, the only deliberation comes because Commissioner Viau asks for clarification of an issue that they are preparing to vote on with little or no discussion.

As for the firing of Emily DeSalvo, he questions why members of the public think they have a right to influence decision making. I don’t know of a single person who implied that they had a right to influence the decision. But I know of many, many people who felt that they have a right to expect sound reasoning for commission decisions and not decision-making based on personal grievances.

Mr. Glass says that Moyle has the right to use social media and make comments as he chooses. Really? Bullying and harassment in any form is unacceptable no matter where it comes from. But Mr. Glass points only to that received by Moyle and his family (which I do not believe is appropriate) but fails to mention the harassment received by members of the community from his side of the issue.

Calling efforts to have Commissioner Barron recuse himself dictatorial is a bit of a reach, since what he is trying to do is unethical at best. Robert’s Rules of Order states: “No member should vote on a question in which he has a direct personal or pecuniary interest not common to other members of the organization.” They were simply attempting to get him to do the right thing, since he seems incapable of doing it on his own.

Referring to those with disabilities as being “inconvenienced” is beyond insulting. People of all ability levels have the right to participate in the governing of their county. Zoom was readily available when DeSalvo was the administrator, but now for some reason it will cost $75,000. Furthermore, the fiduciary responsibility of the commission was nowhere to be found when they went through that firing/hiring process, costing the county thousands of dollars unnecessarily.

Mr. Glass says calls Moyle’s detractors “whiney malcontents” who are committed to victimhood. It seems to me that this could more accurately describe Moyle himself who frequently mentions those who do not like him. This is not about whether we “like” members of the commission. It is about ethical, transparent governing of our county, which we are not currently seeing. He is right when he says “Respect is earned.” And commissioners who are well-respected would not be the subjects of a recall effort.
