In response to Diana Peach’s letter. Enbridge pipeline transports more than Canadian oil. That is the first point. Second, Enbridge has proposed to build a tunnel, fully encased in concrete, to protect the pipeline(s) under the Straits. They are paying for this. At the present time, the pipelines are okay unless an ore boat drops anchor and causes a hole. How many times has that happened? And, since the current pipeline is getting old, it is time to do this other proposal. The tunnel will allow enough room to drive a vehicle inside. So, if there would happen to be a problem, a leak, they could repair it with no trouble and it would be contained inside said tunnel. At the present time, if the pipeline sprung a leak, skilled divers would need to be flown in to repair the pipeline.

The other question was about dead fish. “Tons of dead fish!” Every spring there are a good number of fish that die because of the ice on the waterways. There also are any number of animals, wildlife and others, that die because of the cold weather. That is the way nature works. I don’t believe that there have been tons of fish dying because of oil spills. If so, then it is the best kept secret ever.

If the pipeline is shut down then propane and jet fuel would have to be trucked across the Mackinac Bridge. Diesel trucks. Imagine a bad winter storm with wind and snow and the bridge is shut down for a day or two. Propane is necessary to keep a good portion of the U.P. warm. Solar and wind cannot do it.
