Email messages

EDITOR:

Citizens of Delta County be warned: If you wish to communicate your displeasure with County Commissioners Moyle, Barron, or Petersen, there is a very good chance that your messages may be shared and an effort made to publicly humiliate you at commission meetings.

As most people have likely heard by now, there is a group of concerned citizens who are actively working on a plan to issue a recall of these three commissioners due to their unethical actions. The group recently launched an email campaign asking members to send a daily message to each of the three, politely asking them to resign from their positions. The message indicated that if no response was received or they did not announce their intention to resign at the next meeting, the recall effort would continue.

Many of us participated in this email campaign. No one ever received a response. However, at the county commission meeting of May 2, Commissioner Moyle saw fit to publicly “call out” a few select members who had sent these messages. Furthermore, in the meeting packet, there was a printed list of several people who sent messages, along with the number of messages they supposedly sent. Upon further checking, we learned that these messages had even been printed out and distributed in the packet which, in addition to not respecting the writer’s right to privacy, seems an incredible waste of time and resources.

This is unprecedented. Many people have written emails in the past — none of these were ever included in the board packets nor were names publicly announced. At the same meeting, in fact, Steve Viau read several comments he had received about the annexation issue; and he never once mentioned the name of any of the people involved.

It is unclear why three out of the many who wrote were publicly mentioned. Perhaps Mr. Moyle thought that we would feel shame or be intimidated. We feel neither of those things. The governance of Delta County is the focus of our recall efforts.

The county commission is broken. Three commissioners have decided that they will do what they please without regard to public opinion. We have heard repeatedly that the voters have spoken in electing them. That may be true (although in Moyle’s case, he was elected in spite of having received less than 50 percent of the vote), but they were elected to represent the interests of their constituents fairly and honestly. They were not elected to run roughshod over anyone who disagreed with them.

It’s time to make a change. Let’s bring dignity and respect back to the County Commission. Please join us in our efforts to recall Commissioners Moyle, Barron, and Petersen.
