County board concerns

EDITOR:

I’m writing today as a concerned citizen of Delta County, and a Navy Veteran.

Recently, I’ve become more interested and involved in the politics of Delta County. Mostly after picking up the discourse of folks on both sides of the political aisle. I’m a Centrist-Progressive, so taking both sides into account is something I try to take seriously in political debate.

However, I’ve been seeing some disturbing things coming from Commissioner Moyle, in particular:

– His use of a social media platform to attack and disrespect not only his direct constituents, but members of the County;

– His willingness to violate the ADA by allowing a vote to remove remote live-streamed sessions of the Commissioner’s Meetings;

– His willingness to be open to attacking his constituents and members of the County, in open public;

– His refusal to force Commissioner Barron to recuse himself from the impending annexation vote;

– His insistence that if any member of the public wants to lead prayer at the Commissioner’s Meetings, those prayers must be cleared by him; and that “we are not going to yield to bullies, who want to take away our ability to pray to God, and seek his guidance.” A potential violation of the First Amendment, even though prayer at meeting start is upheld by court precedent.

These are just examples from the last month. However, examples of disrespect and willingness to attack members of the community (take that how you will,) is an ongoing behavior experienced and expressed by citizens of Delta County. Frankly, it’s alarming.

I find Mr. Moyle’s immovable stances unbecoming of someone whom is supposed to be in a position of community leadership; impartial, to serve the best interests of the community. While I respect his position in accepting criticism from the public, I do not respect his retaliatory measures as criticism comes with being a Public Figure (especially one so elected.)

Mr. Moyle has stated his intent to not resign from the Board. That the people have spoken “overwhelmingly” when he was voted in (with less than 50% of the total vote from less than 50% of total registered voters actually voting; which means he was voted in on less than 25% of the total available voices.)

Commissioner Moyle’s actions cannot be allowed to remain unchecked. They are unethical. I urge him to do the right thing.
