City council and old jail site

EDITOR:

I may be looking for a new office for my taxi company. So I have been scouting the area to see what is available. Then it dawned on me that I could probably move into the old jail. It should be available for a couple of years, I would guess. I think it might take that long to get the city council’s fingers and the attorney’s fingers out of the mix. On the one hand, you have several entities ready to plop down big bucks to a first-class development, and we just can’t seem to let go.

Some years ago, Basic Marine purchased a really big section on waterfront property for a dollar. Because of that, we have a deep-water port and for a good portion of the last year, two ships being retrofitted or whatever they are doing. Whatever it is, it is bringing business to Escanaba.

From what I understand, there are three entities that want to build; a hotel, a condo development, and upgrades with the shipyard, whatever we are calling it.

Several meetings ago, I was under the impression that the city council and City of Escanaba was going to get out of the way. Demolition could have already started but attorneys got involved, appraisers got involved, now another appraisal is needed? I think I like the appraiser from a few years ago for Basic Marine. And why is is that none of these numbers are being made public? It is, however, our property. You can make a personal and private matter with regards to the city manager’s salary public, but we can’t find out what the city property is selling for?

I used to have a poster on my wall. It read:
