This letter is to endorse a worthy incumbent candidate of five years for District 3, Theresa Nelson, for the board of commissioners. Due to redistricting, her district has now expanded and caused her to run against an already sitting commissioner. District 3 is now awkwardly expanded and District 5 has been reduced, thus causing a campaign of incumbency for the newly formed District 3.

Theresa Nelson is a woman of integrity, grit and independence. She speaks her mind with respect, willingness to listen and focuses on the best interest of her District as well as the people of Delta County and the City of Escanaba. Her unmatched 33 years of working professionally in this community as the RSVP director have given her a knowledge base and expertise that no other sitting commissioner can claim. She is someone who does not work to reinforce self-interest, conflict of interest and lack of respect for procedures and protocols.

When I think of Theresa Nelson my first thought is collaboration. It is her personality. She has many years of working on various community boards that reflect her diplomatic values and societal values. As examples, she has worked on boards dealing with elderly services, homelessness, conservation of our environment, and economic development. Her board activity is too numerous to mention and, unlike her opponent, she has not been voted off a board.

Despite her representing the people of Ford River, Bark River and, now, Escanaba Township, you can find her at one of the 14 township meetings in Delta County held regularly as well as the City Council of Escanaba. Why? It’s because these are “her” people and she wants to understand and have first hand knowledge about how the community is affected by the decisions made at these important meetings. She does not spend her time listening and acting on innuendo, gossip or an already established agenda. Theresa is dedicated to her cause and she is the right person for the job.

Theresa respects protocols and procedures. She works at making sure she follows the law. She knows who she serves. She serves the people of Delta County honorably and justly.

In November, let’s work together and get rid of the commissioners that have their own interests as their top priority. Theresa Nelson is an incumbent worthy of her post on this Board. Vote Theresa Nelson for District 3 of Delta County. The future includes Nelson as District 3 Commissioner.
