EDITOR:

Jan. 14 at the service center the county board will meet in a committee of the whole to discuss my resolution to make Delta County a Second Amendment sanctuary county. As an elected county commissioner, I have taken my oath of office five times now, and it’s something I take very seriously. I promised to uphold and defend the Constitutions of the U.S. and the state of Michigan.

I have asked to hear from people, and have heard from them in mass. There is nothing in my resolution that would attempt to weaken or change any existing laws of the state or federal governments. I support responsible gun ownership for law abiding citizens. Any law or regulation that supports due process and stands in line with the Fourth and Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and Article 1 Section 6 of the state Constitution is a good law that is based on the fundamental rights guaranteed in both documents.

I have been told by people that I respect to “do your job and pave the roads.” To me, and in my opinion, the county board has done its job very well, I’d be willing to sit down and prove that to anyone that might be doubtful. We have moved Delta County forward in many ways, I welcome the chance to prove that to anyone respectfully.

This resolution is not a political statement to me, it is a statement that should transcend politics and stand at the heart of the American belief system. Regardless if you are for or against this resolution, I welcome your feedback and participation at the meeting on Jan. 14 at 5:15 at the service center.
