Day of remembrance

EDITOR:

Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was first celebrated during the Civil War. The graves of those who were killed in battle were decorated to acknowledge that they had not been forgotten. The day was renamed Memorial Day in the late 1960s. In 1971, the last Monday in May was established as the official Memorial Day. Even though that is the official day of remembrance, my mind often takes me back to personal memories of those listed below and many others who have since left us.

Delta County has sacrificed its sons from the Civil War forward. Among the finest were 14 from my generation that we lost in Vietnam about a half century ago.

Seven from Escanaba: Bruce Craig, William Fillion, Richard Johnson, Richard Lewis, Robert Moras, John Pepin, and Gary Rusha.

Five from Gladstone: Adrian Anglim, James Cook, William Lang, Charles Stewart, and Dwight Stockholm.

One from Rapid River: Paul Proehl

One from Rock: Jimmy Lacosse

Family and friends shall never forget regardless what day it is.
