More groups need to volunteer

EDITOR:

Often I am asked by families in Escanaba about the possibility of their school-age children being eligible for a weekend food backpack. They regularly strike up conversations when they see me purchasing a large quantity of food for the Gladstone-Rapid River Schools food backpacks. There are 150 school-age children receiving weekend food backpacks in Gladstone and Rapid River. Imagine how many Escanaba families that are struggling to have enough money to pay their monthly bills and also to adequately provide sufficient food for their families.

The Community Foundation for Delta County has graciously set aside funding for all Delta County schools to be able to provide weekend food backpacks if there is a group willing to provide the manpower to make this a reality.

I challenge other clubs to take on at least one Escanaba area school’s weekend food backpack coordination. Currently, only Holy Name School has such a food distribution system going in Escanaba. Now is the time for other civic-minded groups to step forward and help prevent eligible Escanaba area students from enduring hunger on weekends.

Our Gladstone-Rapid River Kiwanis Club has patterned our food distribution system after the one originally developed at Mid Peninsula School. This is the third year we have distributed needed food backpacks for Rapid River and the second year for the four Gladstone Schools. The Gladstone Key Club has been instrumental in helping each week with filling the food bags and packing the 20 tubs of bags that are delivered to the five area schools.

I will be more than happy to meet with any club or group and let you know what our experience has been and answer any questions you may have. I can be reached at lbkirschner4@gmail.com.
