Freedoms of press/speech

EDITOR:

Andy Heller, weekly columnist, wrote a column entitled, “Shame On Us” in the Daily Press Wednesday, June 1. There he expressed that we should be ashamed because we are not concerned about the limits that folks might be making on the freedom of the press. Ashamed? We should not censor the press, but, I wish that he understood why many Americans are upset with the preponderance of media that are unashamedly leftist. Trust in U.S. media is an all-time low. Maybe it is because 90 percent plus of all media have leftist leanings and they admit or a blind to that. More and more people watch Fox News because they question or dislike “fake news.” Liberals favor the New York Times and its bias, conservatives the known opposite. Fox attempts to be balanced and sometimes succeeds. It is apparent why voters run to Rush and company. Does liberal media offer balance? Trump has a big share of bad press, some of which he brings upon himself. But, liberal media do all they can to attack and vilify him. Would that have happened to Obama?

Montana representative Gianforte’s shoving any reporter is inexcusable; that Montanans still voted for him, and that he won handily, is just an expression of the West’s distrust of liberals. Maybe still in “flyover country,” we deplorables just don’t “get it.” We find it hard to grovel when told which bathrooms to use, to cut chicken nuggets from school lunches and that’s okay to kill babies. Conservative politicians won great national victories in the 2016 elections, not an accident. Again, liberal media, please do not demand that we should know better, as if New England and Left Coast people know what is best for us. Trump calls the media the “enemy of the people; lot’s of folks feel that way. Andy wants us to support legitimate media — definition: regular, lawful, genuine. Yes.

He wants us to come to the media’s defense. Maybe we should. Also, or instead, let’s come to the defense of unborn children and support for more careful immigration standards — keeping the ‘riffraff’ out.

In addition, let’s work towards the freedom of speech so that all all sides can hear speakers on both left and right and in-between. College campuses are now rallying for safe spaces — -wanting freedom from speech. Even now finally, some liberal professors are being vilified because they also see the damaging effects of restrictions on speakers of all stripes. ’bout time. There’s a rumor that Rush Limbaugh, Bill Maher and activists, Milo Y and the leader of Black Lives Matter are scheduled to appear at Ludington Park soon. Like that — go. Dislike that — stay home. Or, protest — peacefully. Andy wrote, “good god’ (reporters ask questions.) Good, God, help us!
