Unarmed military personnel being targeted
EDITOR:
As an Army veteran, I am appalled at the attacks we have seen on unarmed military personnel, which are not only tragic but totally unacceptable. As a country we should be ashamed that we have allowed this to happen. As in other civilian situations where we declare “gun free zones,” we find these areas become attractive targets.
The military should have a policy of arming at least some personnel in certain situations. Those guarding installations should certainly be armed, and at least some of the military when they are required to gather, on base or other duty location. We must realize that groups have declared war on us and particularly on our military.
We routinely arm law enforcement people and, in fact, in most cases require them to carry a weapon while off duty. We trust them to do the right thing, and we can certainly have no less trust in our military.
