High school musical shined
This week’s bouquets go to:
From Mike Olson, Escanaba:
Once again, for the 60th time, the Escanaba High School Fine Arts Department comes through by hosting Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, bringing it to colorful life for an opening night hurrah. John Beck and Mark Ammel, directors, share their annual usual high quality expertise in directing kids, 14-18. The choreography by Marissa Backlund and Madalyn Mayers was grand and extensive. I was in the first musical in 1963 and these dancers made me look like a clear amateur with 2 left feet. The stage sets were attractive, thanks to many, the voices so good, the acting fine, the whole production so well presented. The leads, Abe Perryman and Emma Frye, made the perfect prince and princess. The trio of ugly mother and selfish sisters of Cinderella — Victoria Mantella, Caroline Furmanski and Addyson Merfeld were the perfect foils. David Pease and Ania Frazier were the star adept King and Queen. The overall vocal singing was top drawer. And the cast of thousands (oops, 40) made it all happen, superb work by the stealth stage crew also. In his third musical, actor Michael Skorupski did his usual magic. All in all, a great night highlighted by no errors. The orchestra did not miss a note. After loud standing applause at the play’s end, there was one thing louder — the very loud scream from the full cast behind the curtain, well-played Esky High!
