Observing NMU’s 125th anniversary

Northern Michigan University is seeking a few — or as many as it can get — good stories and reflections about the university from alumni, faculty, staff and area residents.

It’s all a part of the myriad of activities associated with the celebration of the 125th anniversary year of operations at NMU.

Based on a recent Mining Journal story on the matter, here are a handful of potential ideas people can base their responses on:

– What is your NMU connection?

– What is your favorite NMU memory or story?

– Who was the most influential person you met during your time at NMU and why were they so influential?

– Share the significance of any teams, clubs or organizations you were part of during your time at NMU.

– What is/was your favorite thing to do in Marquette?

– Were there any significant/memorable sporting events, weather occurrences or other on-campus activities?

– Share any dorm/roommate stories you may have.

– What is your current or former profession?

– How did NMU help you get to where you are today?

Photos and recordings up to a minute in length are also welcome. Recorded responses will be broadcast on NMU’s student-run Radio X during Homecoming weekend for a special 125th anniversary celebration show.

Other stories will be shared via Northern Magazine, the university’s Northern Today news site, NMU and NMU alumni social media channels, the NMU blog and the Central U.P. and NMU Archives’ UPLINK (Upper Peninsula Digital Network) project, the Mining Journal story noted.

Individuals can respond to some or all of the following questions and prompts on the NMU blog site by going to nmu.edu/blog/share and selecting “125th Anniversary” from the “Choose One” drop-down menu.

We encourage our readership, many of whom no doubt have history with the university, to put their thinking caps on and participate in this fun and enlightening activity.

Not only is it an excellent way to add to the collected history of NMU, it’s a very good way for casual observers to participate in the 125th anniversary activities on and off campus.
