I am one of the fortunate Veterans to have been selected to go on the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight, Mission XXI, to Washington D.C. on May 3, 2023.
It was a special day and an honor that I will always remember.
I would like to thank Scott Knauf, Kim, the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight Committee, and the many volunteers who helped organize and carry out this complex endeavor. I'm sure it took many countless hours of planning and it was done by all volunteer work. It went very smoothly.
My special thanks go to Cheryl from Escanaba who was my provided "guardian", traveling companion, and friend. She was warm, good humored, attentive, and a joy to be with for 18 hours.
I'd would also like to thank all of the people who donated money to this flight by "rounding up" at Jack's grocery store, or from direct donations.
Many thanks go to the hundreds of people who showed up at the airport at 5:00 AM at the Escanaba airport to see us off, and also to welcome us back home at the end of a long day.
This experience and welcome was quite different from what I experienced when I came home from Viet Nam and landed at O'Hare Field in Chicago August 6th, 1970.
