RAPID RIVER -- Steven J. Royer, age 71, of Rapid River, passed away at home on October 11, 2026.
Steve was born on January 6, 1955, in Mount Clemens, Michigan, to Eugene and Jane (Winkler) Royer Sr. He worked as a shipbuilder for Basic Marine for 11 years. On January 7, 1999, he married Janet Hill, and together they shared a loving life.
One of Steve’s greatest joys was being called "Dadu" by his grandkids, the special name given to him by them, became a title he wore with immense pride. Being their dadu was one of his most treasured roles, and the love he shared with his grandkids brought him a happiness that words could never fully express. Known as a social butterfly, Steve loved to talk and enjoyed connecting with others. He was the kind of friend who would go above and beyond for those he cared about. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and yardwork, as well as making memories with his family during trips to the apple orchard and pumpkin runs. He also had a special place in his heart for his beloved dog, Sassy.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Janet Hill; his daughter, Jackie (Brent) Spanbauer; his grandchildren, Brooke (Trever) Golden and Nolen Spanbauer; his brothers, Timothy (Robin) Royer, Terry (Susan) Royer, and Eugene (Rita) Royer Jr.; his sisters, Bonnie Homsey, Patricia (Joe) Bolone, and Lynnette (Jody) Royer; his sisters-in-law, Teri Royer and Susan Royer; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his cat, Pubby.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Mark and Tracy Royer; his parents-in-law, Don and Arlene Hill; his brother-in-law, Eddie Homsey; numerous aunts and uncles; and his beloved dog, Sassy.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Carrie with OSF Home Health & Hospice and Chaplain Jason for their care, compassion, and support.
