GROSSE POINT WOODS, Mich. -- Mary Jeanne Finlan, 81, of Grosse Pointe Woods, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026.
Born on April 24, 1945 in Escanaba, Michigan, Jeanne was the daughter of Joseph Poffenberger and Margaret (Peggy) Poffenberger. She graduated from Holy Name Catholic High School in Escanaba and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Jeanne devoted her life to nursing and took deep pride in her work. For decades, she cared for patients in hospitals, homes, clinics, and communities. She continued to learn and grow throughout her nursing career, using her knowledge, experience, and compassion to make a difference in the lives of others.
Outside of work, Jeanne was an avid reader. She was exceptionally well-read and often had the latest New York Time Best Sellers on order. She was also a talented seamstress and put her heart into every pillow, dress, quilt, and Halloween costume that she ever created for family and friends. She was a perfectionist and it showed in her incredible attention to every detail. During quiet times, she found great pleasure in bird watching and had an overall love for all animals.
Jeanne is survived by two loving daughters: Anne (Jonathan) Ugval of Grosse Pointe Farms and Amy (Jeffrey) Mayes of Los Angeles, CA; two adoring grandchildren: Evelyn Ugval of Detroit and Thomas Ugval of Madison, WI; one devoted sister: Patricia Maslowski of Drake, CO; two nephews: David Jr. Maslowski of Colorado and Daniel Maslowski of Colorado.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, David Maslowski, and her beloved son Thomas Patrick Finlan, Jr.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Tom Finlan Scholarship, c/o Preble High School, 2222 Deckner Ave. Green Bay, WI 54302. This scholarship was established in memory of Thomas Patrick Finlan, Jr. following his tragic passing in 1987.
