GLADSTONE -- Harold "Harry" Johnson, age 67, of Gladstone, Michigan, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of strength, wisdom, determination, and countless unforgettable memories.
Born December 30, 1958, Harry lived life with purpose and never did anything halfway. He spent 35 years working the swing shift at the Paper Mill, but it was his passion for fitness and bodybuilding that truly defined so much of his life. In 1987, he proudly opened Great Lakes Fitness, a place that became an important part of the community and reflected his dedication to helping others become the best versions of themselves.
Harry's passion for bodybuilding led him to accomplish goals that many only dreamed about. He competed at the highest levels, earning the titles of Mr. Michigan and Mr. Wisconsin, and even making his mark at the prestigious Mr. USA competition in Las Vegas. For Harry, it was never simply about winning, it was about setting a goal, putting in the work, and refusing to stop until he achieved it.
After retirement, Harry found just as much joy in cheering on his granddaughters from the sidelines. He loved watching them play softball and could often be found following them from field to field, proudly supporting every game. When he wasn't at the ballfield, Harry was likely looking for his next challenge in the woods on his bike, pushing himself up one more hill, one more time. He was a man who never met a stranger and was always ready with a story, a word of advice, or a challenge to help someone reach their own potential.
As a father, Harry believed in teaching by example. He challenged, encouraged, and mentored those he loved, always reminding them to set goals, work hard to achieve them, and perhaps most importantly; to help others whenever they could. His lessons reached far beyond the gym and will continue to live on in the people he inspired.
Harry is survived by his one and only daughter, Kristin Triest; son-in-law, Jared Triest; and his five beloved grandchildren, Audrina, Kendra, Adaline, Jude, and baby Jolee. He also leaves behind, uncle Paul Johnson, Janet Juhl and the Juhl family, the Iverson family, and a large community of extended family and friends who loved him dearly. He was especially grateful for his special friend, Ann Kelsey, who helped him keep looking forward and find reasons to smile.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Johnson and Bonnie (Carter) Glover.
Rather than a traditional funeral service, a Celebration of Life will be held in Harry's honor at Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. A service will be held at 4:00 p.m. with Deacon Terry Saunders officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, remember the good times, and
celebrate the remarkable life of a man who believed in working hard, pushing limits, helping others, and never giving up.
Harry may no longer be cheering from the sidelines, riding through the woods, or sharing his next piece of advice, but the lessons he taught, the goals he inspired, and the memories he created will continue to live on in everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
