ESCANABA - Alda L. Sopher, age 88, of Escanaba, passed away July 20, 2026, at Christian Park Village in Escanaba. Alda was born Feb. 22, 1938, in Escanaba, MI, the daughter of Walter and Selma Olsen. Alda graduated from Escanaba High School and earned a nursing degree from Waukesha County Technical College. She cared for those in need at Luther Manor in Milwaukee, Wis., and LindenGrove in Menomonee Falls, Wis.
Alda traveled with her husband, Army Sgt. Donald Sopher, as he was stationed in Germany, Hawaii, Kansas and Ohio, before settling in Menomonee Falls, Wis. Alda returned to her hometown of Escanaba in 2021, where her son, Marc, helped care for her.
Alda often said she loved dogs more than people, illustrating that by rescuing dozens of dogs during her life and supporting dog rescue missions.
Alda was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Selma Olsen, husband, Donald Sopher and brother, Howard Olsen. She is survived by her sons, Marc (Jackie Pride) Sopher of Bark River, and Eric (Roseanne) Sopher of Holmen, Wis.; her sister, Caryl (Charles) Thompson of Oak Ridge, Tenn., niece Susan (Preston) Woody, Oak Ridge, Tenn., nephew Scott (Piya) Thompson, Parkland, Fla.; nephew Stephen Thompson, Oak Ridge, Tenn., sister-in-love Carol (Howard Olsen) Ready of Green Bay, Wis., brother-in-law Bob Sopher of New Auburn, Wis., cousins David (Susan) Westermann of Jacksonville, Fla., and Carl (Tara Teague) Westermann of Anderson, Ind. She will be missed by all, including her fur grandbabies, Mattie and Sophie.
