ESCANABA -- Richard Charles Butryn, 80, passed away July 21, 2026 in Green Bay, WI from complications of a stroke.
Richard was born September 27, 1945, in Escanaba to the late Louis and Genevieve "Jean" Butryn. He was raised in Schaffer and graduated from Holy Name High School in 1964. After high school he was a surveyor for the city of Des Plaines in Illinois for three years. He then worked for Harnischfeger until their closure, and then spent 25 years as a millwright at Mead papermill until retiring in 2006.
Richard was a man of many talents, and enjoyed spending his time in the great outdoors; he loved gardening and hunting with his family. He frequently built things and would invent his own tools to solve unexpected problems. Legend has it Richard built a giant 22-foot-tall swing on his property. He also collected antiques, attended flea markets, and participated in the steam and gas engine show annually.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Winnie Butryn of Schaffer; son, Andy (Lynn) Butryn of Schaffer; sister, Julie (Gary) Gagne of Powers; sister-in-law Alice Butryn; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Jean Butryn; sister; Janice Kroll; and brother, Robert Butryn.
A funeral service will take place at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River, Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 5:00 PM EST. Pastor Christine Bergquist will officiate. The visitation will be prior to the service from 3:00-5:00PM EST. Messages of condolence can be directed to the family at www.crawfordfuneralhomes.net.
