James Schwartz
ESCANABA — James Harold “Jim” Schwartz, 86, of Escanaba, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2026, in Escanaba.
Born on May 28, 1940, in Wells, Michigan, Jim was the son of Clarence and Olive (Eagle) Schwartz. He grew up in Wells, where he learned the value of hard work at an early age, helping his father, a commercial fisherman, catch smelt for local mink ranches. He graduated from Escanaba High School with the Class of 1959 and went on to build a life centered on faith, family, and service to others.
On September 3, 1960, Jim married the love of his life, the former Judith Way, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Together they shared 65 wonderful years of marriage and raised two children, Lori and Peter. Their family was Jim’s greatest source of pride and joy.
Jim worked for nine years at Harnischfeger Corporation before beginning a long and dedicated career with the Michigan Department of Transportation, where he served from 1968 until his retirement in 1997. Known for his strong work ethic and willingness to lend a helping hand, Jim was truly a jack-of-all-trades who could fix just about anything.
A faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Jim believed family always came first. He cherished spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and rarely missed an opportunity to support their activities. He generously volunteered his time coaching Junior Hockey and Little League Baseball, helping shape the lives of countless young athletes. An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing and could often be found enjoying Michigan’s great outdoors. He was also a devoted Detroit Lions fan who faithfully cheered on his team through every season.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Judith; daughter, Lori (Patrick) Curtice of Escanaba; son, Peter (Amy) Schwartz of Rapid River; five grandchildren, James (Kristin) Curtice, Kristi (Ron) Jacques, Wyatt Schwartz, Nathan Schwartz, and Karmyn Schwartz; four great-grandchildren, Madison, Charlie Curtice and Mason and Aaron Jacques; brothers, John (Ruth Ann) Schwartz of Rapid River and Richard Schwartz of Gladstone; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
