Jon R. Flath

ESCANABA – Jon R. Flath, 84, of Escanaba, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

Jon was born on August 30, 1941, in Escanaba, the son of Herbert and Bernice (Swanson) Flath. He graduated from Escanaba High School in 1959 and later earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northern Michigan University in 1966.

Soon after completing his education, Jon enlisted in the United States Army. He served during the Vietnam conflict and was honorably discharged in August 1968.

On June 19, 1968, Jon married the former Barbara Derouin in Escanaba. Together they raised three children and shared more than 57 years of life and family.

After his military service, Jon began his career with the Harnischfeger Corporation in Escanaba. He later joined Bay de Noc Community College, where he served as Bookstore Manager and Housing Director until his retirement in 2006.

Jon had a wide-ranging curiosity and a hands-on spirit. He loved photography, motorcycling, traveling, beekeeping, and discovered his passion for flying early–earning his private pilot’s license at just 16 years old. He also enjoyed sailing, construction projects, woodworking, and welding. A lifelong learner and avid reader, Jon was the person people turned to when something wasn’t working quite right. He always had a suggestion, a solution, or an offer to “take a look.” His sense of humor and love for practical jokes added a touch of mischief to everyday life.

Jon is survived by his wife, Barbara L. Flath; his children, Matthew (Kristi) Flath, Kristin (David) Lord, and Mark Flath; and his grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Nathan, Andrew Lord, and Sophia Flath. He is also remembered by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Warren (Jeanette) Flath, Shirley Shomin, and Harold (Trudy) Flath.

Private services will be held by the family at a later date. Messages of condolence may be shared with the family at www.crawfordfuneralhomes.net. The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the family.
