Sharon Kay Weingartner

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Sharon Kay (Brey) Weingartner passed away peacefully in the presence of her family March 7, 2026 in St. Augustine, FL. Sharon leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Peter; daughters Kristin McManama and Lorin (Sean) McDade; grandchildren Kayla, Cole and Megan; siblings Susan Paventy, Judie (Greg) Gates, Bonnie (Ken) Steketee, and Laurie (Al) Mooney, and brother-in-law David Gemmer. She was preceded in death by her parents, twin sister Shirley and son-in-law Robert McManama.

Sharon and her identical twin sister Shirley (David) Gemmer were born to Norman and Kathryn Brey in Detroit, Michigan in 1943. The twins were the first of six Brey sisters. The girls grew up and attended schools in Grosse Pointe, MI area. Sharon continued her education at the University of Michigan earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1964. At that same time she married her soul mate, Peter (Pete) Weingartner. Many love to hear the story of how they met. Pete had called to ask Sharon’s twin for a date, however she was not available. Sharon said that she could fill in as a substitute. Pete hesitantly accepted Sharon’s offer and 61 years later, the rest is history!

Sharon and Pete lived in Michigan for five years prior to moving to and permanently residing in St. Augustine. Here, they raised their two daughters, Kristin McManama and Lorin McDade. While raising her girls, Sharon also worked in an ophthalmic office and retired after 22 years. After retiring you could either find Sharon at the gym or spending time with her three grandchildren Kayla, Cole and Megan. They gave her great joy and she spent hours reading to them and cheering them on at their various activities.

Sharon had an unwavering faith in God. She was a very active member of Memorial Lutheran Church of the Martyrs, serving the church in many capacities including Stephens Ministry and was one of the longest standing members of the church when she died.

Sharon was vivacious, outgoing, and full of love and joy. She was instantly likable. Her laugh and smile could light up a room. Her family and friends were at the center of her world and she always put others before self. Her desire to be a nurse shone through in how she cared for others her entire life. She gave her time, her patience, and her unconditional love to all who knew her.

Sharon’s family thank the staff at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, especially Maria, Nikki, Brenda, her LPN’s and other south wing staff for Sharon’s care. We also sincerely appreciate the consul and aid provided by Community Hospice and Palliative Care during Sharon’s final months.
