Virgil Monroe

MANISTIQUE – Virgil Monroe, age 82, of Manistique, Michigan, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

He was born on September 26, 1943, in Newberry, Michigan, the son of Vurgel Monroe and Irene (Barker) Bonifield. He completed his education at Newberry Area Schools before furthering his education and obtaining his associates degree. A dedicated and hardworking man, Virgil owned Monroe Electric in Germfask; and subsequently worked as an electrician and retired as Chief Electrical Inspector for the State of Michigan in 2007. He took great pride in his work.

Virgil met and married the love of his life, Delores Gager on July 27, 1963, in Germfask, Michigan. Together they built a life centered on raising their 3 wonderful children, hard work, and community.

He was an active member of the Germfask Christian Fellowship Church and the Germfask Lions Club, serving as the District Governor. He also served as board member for Cloverland Electric until his passing. Virgil enjoyed the outdoors, spending time fishing and was a passionate and avid golfer. He particularly cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren, attending their sporting events and supporting them in all they did. He will be remembered for his steady presence in their lives.

Virgil is survived by his beloved wife, Delores Monroe; his children, Ronald (Diane) Monroe of Reed City, Michigan, Brian (Kay) Monroe of Menominee, Michigan, and Melissa Monroe of Appleton, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Lacy, Zak, Caleb, Colton, Keagan, and Piper Monroe, Andrew Carrick, and Nicolle Wilmot; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Eleia, Brennan, London, and Kingston Monroe; and sister, Linda Tanner of Hartland, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vurgel and Irene; stepfather, Donald C. Bonifield; and brother, Donald E. Bonifield.

Visitation will be held at the Germfask Christian Fellowship Church on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor J.D. Livermore officiating. Virgil will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Curtis, Michigan at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, MI.
