ESCANABA – Merrie Bea Stankowicz, 83, of Escanaba, passed away on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at Bishop Noa Home surrounded by her loving family.
Merrie was born on August 1, 1942 in Escanaba, daughter to Edward and Lucille (LaHay) Harkins. She attended Holy Name High School and graduated in 1960. She then continued her education at NMU, earning her LPN certificate in 1962.
On June 1, 1963, the former Merrie Harkins married Joseph Stankowicz at St. Joseph’s Church. They had three children and were able to share over 60 years together before her passing.
In her early years, Merrie worked as an LPN in the OB department then purchased the Pioneer Inn. She worked in the restaurant, on the floor, and the front desk. She was always happy to see a customer and made sure they were enjoying their experience.
Merrie was involved with several groups and associations including a group of businesswomen called Real Partners. Merrie was a large supporter of the OSF Heart of Gold Dinner and was instrumental with producing the first fundraising dinner. She was an avid golfer with a good swing and actually scored a hole in one in league play at Isla Del Sol County Club in Florida. She was a longtime member of the Escanaba County Club. Merrie was also a racing fan. She never missed a race when her boys competed and enjoyed watching them race at Norway and Escanaba Speedways or out on the ice with Great Lakes Ice Racing.
Among survivors include her husband, Joseph; children, Jim “Peanut” (Jessica), Bobby, and Ron “Bear” (Lori) Stankowicz; grandchildren, Joey Skankowicz, Mark and Nick Letteriello, Kyle, Cody, Jacquelin, and Jaden Skankowicz, and Josh Hall; six great grandchildren; nephews, David (Cody), John (Bobbie), and Tom (Tracy) Stacey; nieces, Madelyn and Carolyn Stacey; along with several cousins.
Along with her parents, Merrie is preceded in death by siblings, James Harkins and Marilyn (Dan) Stacey; and nephew, Mike Stacey.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S 13th St, Escanaba, from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Anne’s Church at 5 p.m. with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. Immediately following the mass, a meal will be served in the church hall.
Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.
