Mary Elizabeth Buttry
ESCANABA – Mary Elizabeth Buttry, age 62, of Escanaba passed away Friday, January 23, 2026, at her home in Escanaba. She was born January 20, 1964, in Manistique, MI and was the daughter of Frederick “Buck” and Mary (Mathison) Prater. Mary graduated from Manistique High School in 1982 and then attended Bay de Noc Community College, receiving her accounting degree. She was employed for 30 years with Garceau Insurance Agency in Escanaba as an insurance agent until her retirement in 2024.
Mary lived for her grandchildren and would never say no to them. She loved to share popcorn with everyone. Mary enjoyed feeding the birds and her favorite bird was a cardinal. She enjoyed planting flowers and her favorite flower was a tiger lily.
Mary is survived by her two sons Robert (Samatha) Buttry of Escanaba and Douglas (Lindsey) Buttry of Wilson; four grandchildren Lillian Seymour, Mavis Buttry, Fredrick Buttry and Everley Buttry; Mother Mary Prater of Manistique; two brothers Kerry Prater and Joel Prater both of Manistique and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by brother James Prater and sister Janice Champeau.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church in Manistique. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church with Rev. B.J. Ash officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the church fellowship hall.
