Fred Pawl Sundstrom
Fred Pawl Sundstrom, 83, of Escanaba, passed away on Friday, January 9, 2026 at Christian Park Village.
He was born in Newberry on February 14, 1942, the son of Lowell and Ruth (Pawl) Sundstrom. The family moved to Escanaba in 1946 and has resided here since that time. Fred attended Escanaba Public School and graduated in 1960. He attended Northern Michigan University.
Fred served in the Army National Guard for six years until his honorable discharge in 1969. He was a proud member of the American Legion in Gladstone.
He was married to the former Patricia Giroux on March 13, 1965. She preceded him in death in 2002. They were long time members of Christ the King Lutheran Church and Fred served on the church council. Fred also became very active in the community, and as the father of five sons was involved in the local Cub Scouting Program.
In 1966, Fred became associated with his father Lowell in the business ownership of Cloverland Paper Company. After the death of Lowell in 1978, Fred continued to own and operate the business until December of 2022.
On, December 31, 2015, Fred married Doris Sundstrom at First Lutheran Church in Gladstone.
Fred enjoyed boating on The Cloverland Queen, fishing, hunting, and especially spending time with his sons and grandchildren at Camp Toivo. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of Escanaba; sons, John K. (Jean) of Gladstone, William L. (Kristi) of Lynn Haven, FL, Pawl S. (Susan) of Chantilly, VA, Thomas M. of Three Lakes, WI, and R. Douglas of Escanaba; stepchildren, Jeff, Tom, Wendy, and Peggy; sister, Linnea (Robert) VanEffen of Escanaba; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by parents, Lowell and Ruth; wife, Patricia; daughter in law, Tracy Sundstrom; brother, Michael (Phroscelisa) Sundstrom; and sister, Sandra (George) Papich.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 15th from 1 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. Military honors will be conducted at 2:45 p.m. and the funeral service will immediately follow with Pastor Steven Hartten officiating.
Memorials may be directed to the Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River or UP Health System Home Care and Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery.
