Flossie M. Mundinger
GLADSTONE — Flossie M. Mundinger, age 90, of Gladstone, passed away at OSF St. Francis Hospital on December 30, 2025, concluding a rewarding and fulfilling life.
She was born on April 20, 1935 in Manistique to Victor and Ruby Freeman. Four years later her sister Ruth completed their family. Her upbringing in Manistique was one of her favorite parts of her life. She often spoke about loving living in the country and shared many fond memories of walking to Indian Lake for picnics before the state park was formed.
Flossie attended Manistique High School and graduated in 1954before getting a job at the Manistique Pioneer Tribune, which planted a talent for reading, bookkeeping, and writing. She later moved to the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she worked at the health clinic office. It was there that she met and worked with her future sister-in-law who later played matchmaker by introducing her to Albert Mundinger of South Lyon. It wasn’t long before they were married on September 6, 1958 in Ann Arbor; one of her favorite memories was walking from her apartment to the church in her wedding gown.
Albert and Flossie lived in Ann Arbor before moving to South Lyon where they started their family. Their daughter, Carol, was born in 1959, and later joined by their son, Jeffrey, in 1963. Eventually they made the move to the U.P. in 1972, first living in Escanaba for a year, then settling in Gladstone where they built their forever home in Lake Minnewasca.
Flossie was a woman of many talents that she liked to share with her family. Flossie had a love for photography and she was very talented at it. She enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, crocheting, knitting, and sewing. She enjoyed sharing her hobbies with her children and grandchildren who fondly remember learning from her. She is especially remembered to be a wonderful cook and baker, sharing her homemade bread and pies with her loved ones. Many of her other recipes have been passed down and are cherished to this day, including her meatloaf, peach cobbler, and raisin cookies.
Her home was adorned with her crochet talents, including doilies, Christmas stockings, and the family Christmas tree skirt. Additionally, she had a special love for cats as she always had them growing up and they reminded her of home. She was known to have her cat sitting in her lap in her later years which brought her comfort and peace.
Flossie and Albert shared a variety of hobbies together, including flower gardening, country music, playing cards, and McDonald’s dates. They also loved to sightsee, camp, and go on picnics; particularly Indian Lake State Park in Manistique. This later nurtured a family tradition to spend summer days having picnics by the lakes in the U.P.
Flossie had many wonderful qualities, but the one she was most proud of and remembered for was her devotion to her children and grandchildren. They could always count on her for a helping hand. She was a woman of patience and quiet wisdom.
Flossie is preceded in death by her parents Victor and Ruby Freeman. She is survived by: her loving and devoted husband, Albert Mundinger of Gladstone, MI; daughter, Carol (Peter) Van Steen of Gladstone, MI; son, Jeffrey Mundinger (Colleen) of White Bear Lake, MN; sister, Ruth Gross of Westford, MA;grandchildren, Amy (Ross) Vanden Bosch, Matthew Mundinger(Emy), Jonathan (Haille) Van Steen, and Brett Mundinger; and great-grandchildren Fern, Briar, and Elliett.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at both OSF St. Francis Hospital and Christian Park Village for their care and compassion, with special thanks extended to Jenna and April.

Flossie will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Manistique. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Mundinger family.
