DOWAGIAC – Daniel (Dan) C. Berg, age 70, of Dowagiac, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 1, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 26, 1955, in Escanaba, Michigan, the son of Arnold and Bernice (Mattson) Berg. Dan grew up in Rapid River and graduated from Rapid River High School in 1973.
On August 29, 1984, Dan married the former Bernice M. Hoese and became a devoted father to her children. He worked for the Harnischfeger Corporation and later owned his own logging business before relocating to Dowagiac. There, he spent many years as a truck driver for North Side Feed, W.W. Transport, and Foodliner. Dan had a love for operating heavy equipment and could often be found on his bulldozer, lending a helping hand to neighbors and friends. A faithful member of First Pentecostal Church of Edwardsburg, he generously gave of his time, talents, and resources in service to the church and in furthering the gospel.
Dan is survived by his loving family: his wife, Bernice “Berny” Berg; his son, Dennis Berg, from an earlier marriage; his stepchildren, Thomas (Trina) McMillan, Michael (Kristen) McMillan, and Melissa Viteri; his brother, David (Lanny) Berg; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Bernice Berg.
Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at First Pentecostal Church in Edwardsburg, Michigan. Funeral services celebrating Dan’s life followed at 6 p.m., officiated by Rev. Robert Geans, Jr. A committal service took place at Mission Hills Cemetery in Niles on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 10 a.m., with Rev. David Helmuth officiating.
