Lenny Clinton Smith
ESCANABA — Lenny Clinton Smith “Len Dog”, 72, of Escanaba, left us unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 18, 2025, while doing what he loved most working with his hands and heart. He was born on July 12, 1953 in Escanaba, son of Leonard and Marion (Blixt) Smith Sr. Smitty graduated from Escanaba High School in 1971 and married the former Donna Desilets at St. Patrick Catholic Church on September 2, 1978.
His remarkable journey with his careers began with a decade at Harnischfeger, after which he dedicated more than 35 years to Mead Paper (Verso), retiring in 2015. Despite officially retiring in 2015, Lenny’s passion for work led him to take on new roles at Auto Value and Northern Machining and Repair, much to his family’s surprise. Even in retirement, his commitment was unwavering; he maintained Peninsula Federal Credit Union from 1981 until 2025, never truly stepped away from the labor he enjoyed so deeply. Each time his loved ones thought he was finally slowing down, Lenny would return home with a spark in his eye and news of another adventure, his energy and dedication were boundless.
Outside of work, Lenny found joy in collecting rare coins and restoring classic cars–passions that reflected his appreciation for things with history and character. His excitement was contagious when he’d stumble across a rare penny on the ground or when he was souping up his new Harley Davidson motorcycles with all-chrome details. These hobbies weren’t just pastimes, they were a testament to his meticulous and very particular personality. For Lenny, nothing was done right unless it was precise.
To his family and friends, Lenny was more than a hard worker; he was the heartbeat of every
gathering, a wellspring of wisdom, humor, and unwavering support. His presence brightened the darkest days, and his stories–often peppered with laughter and gentle teasing–became treasured memories all who loved him hold dear. Lenny’s tireless work ethic and enthusiasm for life inspired everyone who knew him, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of kindness.
Lenny also loved his dog HerShe. HerShe would sit by the door when he left the house and would be waiting there for his return in the evening. Even though he said he didn’t like animals, he really had a soft spot for all animals but wouldn’t admit to it. He often called his daughters several times a day asking how the horses and goats were behaving. He would bring treats out to them but refused to give the horses apples because he thought they could choke on the seeds. One of Lenny’s most beloved traits was his sense of humor. Renowned as a jokester among friends and family, he brought joy and laughter to every gathering. His jokes–sometimes outrageously silly–were part of the legacy he leaves behind, a reminder of how he lit up the lives of those around him. Lenny was also a proud member of the Elks, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a story.
Lenny is survived by his wife of 47 years, Donna (Desilets) Smith; children, Clinton Smith, JuliAnn (Patrick) McKeage, and Craig Smith all of Escanaba, and Jamie (Josh) Fisher of Carney; grandchildren, Ariah Fisher, Averyanna Fisher, Dallin Fisher, Liam McKeage, Logan McKeage, Peyton McKeage, Caden Smith, AnnaBella McKeage, and Karter Smith; Great-Grandchildren: Alahnya Larson (Fisher), Amihya Larson (Fisher); Sisters, Sharon Johnson, Charlene (LeRoy) Scheeneman, and Parma (Donald) Martineau; and Nieces and Nephews: Toni Mendina, Traci Millette, Terry Lancour, Micky Lamarch, Tony Martineau, Crissy Strom, Becky Griebel, Timmy Martineau, LeeAnn Peterson, and Brian Sheeneman.
