Nancy Marie McIlyar

Nancy Marie McIlyar

Nancy Marie McIlyar, age 93, of Newark, passed away on September 26, 2025 while holding the hands of her children and listening to one of her favorite and fitting hymns — “I’ll Fly Away.” Her family is at peace knowing that Nancy knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior and is now with Him forever in eternity.

Nancy was born on February 10, 1932, in Escanaba, Michigan to Bertil C. and Bernadette B. (DeShambo) Anderson. After her mother’s early passing, Nancy was raised by her father, step-mother Mary, grandparents and extended family. She had many fond memories of her childhood that she held close and shared with her children and grandchildren.

Nancy graduated from the University of Minnesota and began a teaching career that spanned 32 years-with most of those years spent teaching 1st grade. She had a passion for teaching children to read because “that was something that they would use all their lives.” She may have retired from teaching in a school-but she joyfully continued teaching her grandchildren and great grandchildren at her kitchen table.

She enjoyed playing euchre, reading books, and watching The Ohio State Buckeyes play football and basketball. Nancy was a member of Newark Central Christian Church. She was determined, compassionate and thoughtful in her actions and her advice. Most importantly, Nancy will be remembered as a loving, caring woman who brought comfort, support and laughter to those around her. Nancy left a legacy behind in how she treasured and nurtured her family.

Nancy is survived by her children: Ann (Donald) Malarky, Lynn McIlyar, Robert (Jackie) McIlyar, and Jan (Tim) Green; grandchildren Abbie McIlyar, Michael (Liz) McIlyar, Rob Malarky, Kristen (Billy) Jordan, Alex Malarky, Olivia (Zander) Shashura, Beck (Alexis) Green, Cai (Morgan) Green, and Cade Green; great-grandchildren Hudson & Penny Jordan, Britt, Eden & Cana Shashura, and Psalm & Wren Green; her brother Donald (Sharon) Anderson as well as nephews, nieces and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert McIlyar.

Visitation will be held from 3-7 pm Sunday, October 5, 2025 at Brucker & Kishler Funeral Home, 859 N. 21st Street, Newark, Ohio 43055. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, October 6, 2025 at Newark Central Christian Church, 587 Mount Vernon Road, Newark, Ohio 43055. Burial will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery immediately following the funeral service with Pastor Tim Green officiating.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ohio’s Hospice and Taylor David for the wonderful care shown to Nancy.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Nancy’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
