Marie C. Mayville

ESCANABA — Marie C. Mayville, 97, of Escanaba, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025 with her family at her side at Bishop Noa Home.

She was born on August 12, 1928 in Escanaba, daughter to Joseph and Mary (Kirkish) Sayklly. Marie graduated from St. Joseph High School, class of 1946 and has been a lifelong resident of Escanaba. She grew up working at Sayklly’s and made specialty sundaes and malts. She met her husband, Don, and they started dating after she made him an extra thick malt. Soon after, she worked at the candy factory for her brother, Fred. She was the number one candy dipper and managed the candy shop for several years. During this time, she also sold Tupperware in the evenings.

On September 1, 1951, Marie married Donald N. Mayville at St. Patrick’s Church in Escanaba. They were blessed with a wonderful family of nine children. Her most important job was raising and loving her family.

She never stopped working as she continued her career at Sayklly’s Confectionary & Gifts for her daughter. She served sweet people and wrapped chocolate until she was 96. One of her favorite jobs was decorating fudge Easter eggs. She decorated thousands of eggs over the years.

Family meant the world to Marie. Marie enthusiastically supported and followed her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s sporting and academic events. She loved parties, weddings, and danced to the end…most often the last one to leave. She enjoyed endless summers at the Mayville Cottage on the Lake and the memories made. Her annual birthday celebrations to have her family together were cherished times as well. She was an amazing cook and taught her family all the family Lebanese recipes.

In her younger years, she enjoyed tap dancing in front of the store. Most days for Marie involved going to daily mass, enjoying her family, sipping on a Coke, and serving chocolate. In addition to her family, meeting Donny Osmond in Las Vegas was truly a highlight in her life.

Marie was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Elks Club 354, and Curves.

She will be deeply missed by her children, MaryJean (Bob) Gauthier, Vicki (Lee) Novak, Don (Becky) Mayville, Debbie (Jim) Kirby, Dan (Tracy) Mayville, Tony (Connie) Mayville, Tim (Julie) Mayville, Kevin (Kristi) Mayville, and Tina (Ned) Hall; many cherished and loved grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; and grandchildren, Sarah Jo Mayville and Terry King; and siblings, Josephine Sayklly, Angeline (Peter) Kobasic, Sister Martha Jean Sayklly, Fred (Elaine) Sayklly, Margaret Sayklly, Elizabeth (John) Schiska, Edward Sayklly, and Beatrice Sayklly; and brother in law, Mike (Marilyn) Mayville.

Visitation will be on Friday, October 17th from noon – 4 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. At the conclusion of the mass, a meal will be provided in the church hall.
