Charles Evans Hughes

Charles Evans Hughes
ESCANABA — Charles Evans Hughes passed early on Sunday, October 19, 2025 in Escanaba, MI at the age of 80 having departed much as he lived–connected to the people he loved and sustained by his faith in Jesus Christ. He is remembered by his devoted wife Myrna (Rose) Hughes, his 3 children and 5 grandchildren, a huge family of cousins, aunts, uncles and in-laws and a community of people he touched throughout his life, including his faith community at Grace Church in Gladstone, MI.
Born May 7, 2025, to parents Jeanette (Abbott) Hughes and Robert Hughes in Milwaukee, WI, he grew up in southern Wisconsin with brother Jerry and sister Nancy and surrounded by extended family. He finished school in Sun Prairie, WI and embarked on a long career providing insurance and financial planning. A thoroughly social person, this gave him work that suited his enduring strength and interest, being with people.
“Chuck” was known in every community he lived in or visited because he talked to everyone! He talked to the server and guests at every restaurant, the new friends he made in the many service organizations where he was active, or in his many activities at church. His great joy was in sharing a quip, asking questions and looking anyone he met in the eye to make sure they knew they had been seen. He aimed to share his love of Jesus with everyone.
In his last days spent at Christian Park Center, he was the resident who greeted each person he encountered with a cheery “good morning!” and a pat on the arm. He gathered everyone around to sing “happy birthday” when he found out it was a staff member’s big day. He made an impact. His family is so thankful for the amazing, loving care he received at Christian Park–and how they saw and celebrated who he was.
While ill health crept into his last days, he maintained his faith that he would be going home to Jesus Christ. His family imagine him in heaven dancing and singing “This Little Light of Mine” with Jesus.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Grace Church, 528 28th St., Gladstone, MI 49837. Funeral services celebrating the life of Charles Hughes will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday at Grace Church with Pastor Jon Potes officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the Grace Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery. The Anderson Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Hughes family with the arrangements and online condolences can be sent to the family at www.andersonfuneralhomes.net.
