Jerine J. Paulin (Labelle)

ESCANABA — Jerine J. Paulin (Labelle), 92, of Escanaba, passed away August 5 at her daughter’s home while under hospice care. She was born November 2, 1932, in Stambaugh, Michigan to Arvo and Gertrude (Senechal) Hendrickson. She grew up in Escanaba and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1950. The former Jerine J Hendrickson married Ervin “Erv” J Paulin Jr. on August 28, 1954, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Together they raised three children, Timothy (Susan) of Charles Town, W.V., Andrew (Laurie) of Newton, Wis. and Lois (Grant) Ziems of Gladstone, Mich. Erv preceded her in death on July 14, 1999. In 2001, she married Lionel Labelle who preceded her in death on May 31, 2020.
After high school, Jerine attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, earning a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught in Albion, Michigan and later Marshall, Michigan for eight years. While there, she earned a master’s degree in education from Western Michigan University. In 1968, the family decided to move back to Escanaba where she taught 3rd grade at Jefferson Elementary School in Escanaba until her retirement in 1987.
Jerine loved socializing with family and friends. She enjoyed meeting with former coworkers for lunch on a regular basis. While spending winters in Florida, she would encourage family to come down, “Get out of the cold,” and guide them through all the sites the state has to offer. When Jerine and Lionel were no longer able to make the long drive each season, she encouraged her kids to continue heading south. This resulted in what is known as “Sibling Week,” where they, along with their spouses, continue to choose a different warm destination to spend a week every winter. Jerine was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Along with her three children, Jerine is survived by her sister Lois (Hendrickson) Loew of Mt. Airy, MD, grandchildren Audrey, Allison, Luke, Perri, Elliott, Clair, Paige, Greg, Daniel and Douglas and eight great-grandchildren. She also has two sisters-in-law Kathy (Joe) Gagne of Bark River, MI and Debbie (Anthony) Jodacy of Niagara, WI and close family members William (Sharon) Meredith and Maureen (George) Moore of Arlington, TX. The family would like to recognize Sherry Artley, her friend and caregiver and to U.P. Home Health Hospice staff Kristy, Sarah and Cody. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sister Anne (Hendrickson) Temby and granddaughter Julie Meredith.
