ESCANABA — Denise A. Porath, 69, of Escanaba, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 of natural causes.

She was born on February 24, 1956 in Escanaba, daughter to Earl J. and Ella Mae (Pepin) Porath. Denise graduated from Escanaba High School, class of 1974. She was one of the first female athletes to take advantage of Title IX. Denise was an outstanding athlete who ran track, played both basketball and softball during her high school years. Because of her speed and athletic ability, she was offered a scholarship to attend Northern Michigan University to play Field Hockey. Denise led the team as captain and they achieved great success during her five years playing. She tried out for the Olympic Team in 1979 but the U.S. boycotted the Olympics in 1980. Additions to her achievements include the induction to the NMU Hall of Fame in 2006 and more recently, the UP Sports Hall of Fame.

After earning her degree in education, Denise began teaching. She thrived during her career in education at North Central Area Schools, retiring after 32 years. She coached basketball and golf at Powers North Central.

For 35 years, Denise enjoyed fastpitch softball and played on two state championship teams. She loved the outdoors and took pleasure in hunting (especially with a bow), fishing, playing games, doing puzzles, reading, and golfing. Denise was a member of the Highland Golf Club and had a successful run as club champion for five years along with seven runner-up titles. She was also a member of the Eagles Club.

Survivors include her siblings, Ken Porath of Bark River, Rodney Porath of Bark River, Chris (Bill) Engdahl of Escanaba, and Sharon (Tom) Polishak of Escanaba; nephews and nieces, Patrick, Kelly, and Gary Porath, Krystal Hakkola, and Tommy, Rachel, and Ben Polishak; numerous great-nephews and nieces including special niece, Shelby; her dog, Ollie; and several special friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 5 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Rick Courier officiating.

Burial will take place next to her parents in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
