Floyd George Savoie

POWERS — Floyd George Savoie, 86, of Powers, Mich. passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025 at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba, Mich after a two and a half year battle with Parkinson’s and dementia.
Floyd was born September 1, 1938, on the family farm in Powers, to the late George and Rose (Posont) Savoie and lived there 84 years before moving to Evergreen Meadows Assisted Living Facility in Norway, Mich., where he resided until moving to Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers this past March.
Losing his mother at age 14 had a life-long impact on him. He went on to graduate from Powers-Spalding High School in 1956, even though he’d rather be in the woods peeling poplar trees.
Floyd met his wife Mary LaChapelle on a blind date at a roller rink in Escanaba, Mich. in 1957 and after four years of courtship were married on July 22, 1961 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Escanaba. They went on to celebrate 64 years together.
Floyd worked numerous jobs prior to his career as a certified welder at Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wis., building ships for the United States Navy. In 1970 he joined the MI Carpenters’ Union as a Millwright and traveled throughout the eastern United States for work. He was a proud union member and received his 50-year pin in 2020. Also, during this time, he owned and operated Rural Welding Service and a plumbing business. After his retirement in 1997 he went on to hire neighborhood and local young men to help around the farm, teaching them how to conduct themselves on the job and never missing an opportunity to play the foreman role!
Floyd was a devout Catholic who loved the Divine Mercy Chaplet and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. He was a member of St. Bruno’s Parish in Nadeau, where he served as a member of the finance committee, made repairs in the church and rectory for many years (always donating his time and never wanting public acknowledgement for his work), and along with Mary, coordinated the monthly Eucharistic Adoration.
In addition to his love for his family and special love for his grandchildren, he enjoyed two kinds of music, Country and Western!
Floyd is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife Mary, daughters Eileen (Joseph) Sparpana, Renee (James) Vandermissen, and son Jesse (Laura) Savoie, six grandchildren, Noah, Isaiah and Joel Savoie and Allison, Taylor and Carly (Nick) Sparpana Ellering. He is also survived by a sister, Marian Samodral, brother-in-law, Richard Wagner and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, along with a very special great niece Christy Servant.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by sisters and brothers-in-law: Audrey (Russell) Wright, Ray Cadeau, Harriet Wagner, Beverly (Herb) Seefeldt, John Kadow, Walter Samodral and Dick Morran and brothers Vernon (Lillian) and Melvin. He was also preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Raymond, Ronald (Lois) and Francis (Janet, Francie) LaChapelle, and a sister-in-law Patricia (Dwight) Lee.
The family would like to thank the staff at Pinecrest, UP Health System Home Care & Hospice and OSF St. Francis for the compassionate and loving care they provided Floyd in these last months, weeks and days and for the education provided the family about the effects of Parkinson’s disease and emotional support as Floyd transitioned to his forever home with Jesus.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Devine Mercy Chaplet for whoever would like to join with his family, then visitation will continue until 11:30 a.m. (CST) on Tuesday July 8, 2025 at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home in Spalding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. (noon) (CST) on Tuesday at St. Bruno’s Parish in Nadeau with Fr. Benny Mathew officiating. Burial will follow Mass in the Nadeau Township Cemetery. A luncheon will be held in the church parish hall.
