STONINGTON — Mark Joseph Chechack, 60, of Stonington, passed away June 1, 2025 do to injuries suffered from an automobile accident. He was born July 27, 1964 in Mount Clemens, Michigan to John and Barbara (Crawford) Chechack He grew up in Utica, Michigan and graduated from Utica High School in 1982. Mark remained in the Utica area and worked for Macomb County as a surveyor and retired on January 2, 2021.
Mark’s dream was to always live in the Upper Peninsula. Since the 80s Marks family has had hunting property in Carney and he had wonderful memories of hunting on this property and knew he wanted to retire here one day. Marks father passed away in 2023 and in his honor he wanted to shoot a buck on his dad’s property and he successfully did that this past deer season. His love for the U.P. led him to Stonington where he purchased property and built a home. On July 22, 2023 he married the love of his life, Jamie on the beach at their home surrounded by their closest friends and family. In 2024 they purchased the Gladstone Deli and Catering and were a great inseparable team.
Mark loved everything about the outdoors, whether it be fishing, hunting or trapping. Some of Marks most valued times were spent doing these with his son, Evan. Mark always looked forward to and enjoyed his yearly hunting trips to North Dakota and spending time with his best friends. Whether working, traveling, relaxing or family time Mark and Jamie were side by side cherishing every minute they were together and never took a day for granted. Mark always wanted to visit Alaska, he and Jamie just returned from an Alaskan cruise a month ago.
Marks positive outlook and ability to find the good in everything touched so many people he came in contact with in his life. Since moving to the U.P., Mark has made friends everywhere he went and cherished each of these friendships.
Mark is survived by his wife Jamie; son, Evan (Sam Kehren) Chechack, Rochester, Mich.; stepchildren, Devin Tasson (Danielle Wassan), Marquette, Mich. and Caitlyn Tasson (Ethan Wiitanen), Houghton, Mich.); mother, Barbara Chechack, Shelby Township, Mich.; father – mother-in-law, Patty and Jerry “Pug” Doucette of Gladstone, Mich. Also survived by sister, Sue (Tom) Cox, Canton, Mich.; niece, Connie Cox and great-niece, Alexis O’Neil; uncle, Dick Crawford, Kalkaska, Mich. and Ron and Dee Crawford, Kalkaska, Mich. An not to forget Fred, Mark’s dog who was miraculously uninjured in the automobile accident. Mark was preceded in death by his father John Chechack and beloved dog Buddy.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Mark Joseph Chechack will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev, Steven Cowen officiating. A luncheon will follow in the Bay De Noc Room located in the Anderson Funeral Home.
