Harriet Jane Larson Masta
ESCANABA — Harriet Jane Larson Masta, age 94, of Escanaba passed away September 18, 2024 at her home in Danforth. She was born February 1, 1930 in Escanaba and was the oldest of 15 children born to George and Evelyn (Miron) VanDerlinden. She grew up in Soo Hill, was the Delta County Potato Queen at age 16 and graduated from Escanaba High School in 1947. The former Harriet VanDerlinden married Llewellyn Larson on June 12, 1948 in Escanaba and together they owned and operated Farm Sales Implement. Llewellyn preceded Harriet in death on November 19, 2005. Harriet also worked at the Mata Brown Dress Shop in Escanaba and later at the Michigan State Extension Office. Harriet married Leo Masta on June 16, 2007 and he preceded her in death on August 8, 2008. Harriet enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, traveling, and wintering in Arizona.
Harriet is survived by daughters, Carol Latvala of Escanaba, Karen (Brian) Horkman of Jasper, Georgia, and Cherryl (Ed) Sarin of Boston, Mass.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, siblings Rita, Roland, Donna, Linda, Mary and Gary and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by siblings Howard, Joyce, Anita, Vernon, Lois, Gordon, Frances, and Beatrice.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, October 26 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Harriet Larson Masta will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Mike Markwell officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
