Barbara Hauser

ALAMEDA, Cali. — Barbara Hauser, 83, former Escanaba resident, passed away peacefully in her home in Alameda, Calif. on July 23, 2024. Barbara was born on June 9, 1941 in Queens, New York, to Dr. Joseph and Adele Detrano. She earned a bachelor of science degree in biology from Trinity College in Washington DC, where she met her husband James J. Hauser Jr., a graduate of Georgetown University, and Air Force officer. Together they raised four children living in several Eastern states as a military family, ultimately settling in Escanaba, Mich., where James served as city manager. Here she earned a Master’s of Science degree in occupational education from Ferris State University, taught at Bay de Noc Community College completing her career as the department head of the Water Technology Department, publishing several industry books. Barbara was a passionate gardener, dog lover, enjoyed creating Faberge style eggs, and loved the wildlife, seasons, and beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. In her later years, she resettled with her beloved dog Penny to Alameda, Calif., enjoying sunny days tending her rose garden.

Barbara is survived by her four children, James Hauser, Elizabeth Coombs, Phyllis Thompson, Joseph Hauser, and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, September 14, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of Barbara Hauser will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Father Fran DeGroot from St. Anne Catholic Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
