Carol (Niemela) Mellette

JOSHUA TREE, Calif. — Carol (Niemela) Mellette, passed away on July 28, 2024 at her home with her son, Max at her side following a courageous battle with cancer.

Carol was born on April 12, 1950, in Escanaba, to Reino and Toini (Linjala) Niemela. She grew up in West Rock and was a 1968 graduate of Rock High School. Carol went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in biology from Northern Michigan University and began her career in medical technology in Petosky, Mich.

Upon meeting her future husband, Gary Mellette, she moved to Joshua Tree, Calif. and built a life full of many interests and activities, including gardening, hiking, dance classes, yoga, skiing and traveling. One of her favorite places to visit was Hawaii, which filled her with a sense of peace and tranquility and she enjoyed sharing it with her family. While Carol built her life in California, she always found ways to maintain strong connections with her family, cherishing every opportunity to visit and reconnect.

Carol’s greatest joy was the birth of her son, Max. Motherhood became her life’s central focus. Carol also enjoyed working as a paraprofessional at local schools, supporting students with special needs. Upon retirement, she immersed herself in supporting the Mojave Desert Land Trust, where she volunteered to do seed cleaning to help protect and preserve native plants. Carol’s life was a testament to her love for family, nature and community.

Carol is survived by her son, Max Mellette, of Sunnyvale, Calif., along with brothers, Alan (Mary) Niemela of L’Anse, Tom, (Sandy) Niemela of Kingsford and sister Joanne (David) Amis of Gladstone.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins and was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, parents, in-laws and brother James Niemela.
