Sam Poquette
GLADSTONE — Sam Poquette, 89, of Gladstone, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at Christian Park Village in Escanaba.
He was born in Engadine, Mich., son to Sam W. and Robena F. (Smith) Poquette. Sam was raised in Wells, Mich. Despite contracting polio at the young age of six, he never let it hold him back in life. After attending Escanaba High School, Sam was employed with Northern Motor Rebuilders for 22 years before retiring in 1979.
On July 6, 1957, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Porath of Escanaba, Mich. Together he and his wife owned and ran Bud’s grocery in Flat Rock, Mich. and maintained numerous rental properties.
He was an avid stamp and coin collector and was a skilled woodworker. Sam took great pride in maintaining his flower and vegetable gardens.
He is survived by his daughters, Laura (Allen) Beauvais and Susan (Edward) Lindin, both of Escanaba; siblings, John (Dianna) Poquette of Aurora, Ill., Shirley (Edward) Arts of Wells, and Patricia (Aaron) Pietrzak of Danforth; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and longtime companion, Mary Trombley of Brampton, Mich.
In addition to his parents and wife, Evelyn, he was preceded in death by his son, Tom Poquette; daughter, Karen (Barry) Wils; and brothers, Robert, Jim, and Roger.
