William John Good

BARK RIVER — William John Good, age 88, of Bark River passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers, Mich. He was born December 1, 1935 in Escanaba and was the son of Chester and Helen (Sundquist) Good. Bill graduated from Bark River High School in 1954 and then attended Michigan State University for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served for two years being stationed in Babenhausen, Germany. Bill returned to Bark River and married the former JoAnn Lee LaFleur on April 18,1959 at Sacred Heart Church in Schaffer and JoAnn preceded him in death on July 25, 2023. Bill joined his parents on the Good Family Dairy Farm. In 1980 Bill and JoAnn’s oldest son Doug, joined Bill on the “Good Farm”. After Bill’s retirement from the farm, he worked at the Soil Conservation District for three years. Bill never lost his passion for farming and always helped on the farm in his spare time. Bill was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, Michigan Milk Producers Association, Farm Bureau, Highland Golf Club and helped at Bark River High School Varsity Basketball games running the game clock. He loved to travel, went on many cruises, and enjoyed wintering in Englewood, Fla. with JoAnn since 1996. Bill loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and often looked forward to family gatherings.

William John Good is survived by his sons, Greg (Berta) Good of Escanaba, and Bob Good of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughters-in-law, Mary (Craig) Schmelzer and Wendy (Scott) Ball; grandchildren, Michele (Bob) Flynn, Brian Good, Brittany (Brian) Wray, and Sam Good; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Simon, Luke, and Samantha Flynn; one step-grandson; two step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet Hanson of Port Huron, Mich. and Bonnie (Robert) Barr of Skandia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son, Doug Good; and infant daughter, brothers James and Arthur Good and sisters Doreen Bartozek, Jean McDonough, Lois Anderson, and Karen Berquist.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, July 1, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services celebrating the life of William John Good will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Salem Lutheran Church in Bark River, Mich. with Rev. Steven Hartten officiating. Burial and military honors will be conducted by the Bark River American Legion and the U.S. Army Michigan National Guard. A reception will be held at the Highland Golf Club following the burial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials please be directed to the William and JoAnn Good Scholarship Fund at Bay College.
