John L. Creighton

MANISTIQUE — John L. Creighton, age 71, died at home on April 15, 2024, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the son of Jack and Helen (Shust) Creighton and graduated from Manistique High School in 1971. Following graduation from Ferris State University in 1975, John spent his career at Alex Creighton Co. In 2003, he married the former Jenifer (Behrend) Kemper and together with her three children, they became a family. After Alex Creighton Co. was sold, John and Jen started a wholesale used car business which they operated until his retirement.

John had a wide variety of interests including boating, flying, snowmobiling, hunting, golfing, and traveling. Among his fondest memories were those made growing up with the families around Dodge and Island Lakes where his parents had a cabin on the channel. Years later, he built his home on the lot next door. In 2017, he and Jen bought a camp in Manistique Township. With the help of his buddies and countless hours of extensive remodeling, it became a special place for hunting, bonfires, playing euchre, side-by-side rides, porch dinners, feeding the deer, drinking toddies, and solving the world’s problems.

Survivors include his wife, Jen; his stepchildren whom he loved as his own, Andrew (Jackie) Kemper of Chassell, Mich.; Karl (Chelsey) Kemper of Wausau, Wis.; and Christine Kemper of Crystal, Minn.; granddaughter, Lila and two grandsons due to be born this summer. He is also survived by his sister, Karen (Dewayne) Nygard; brother, Jim (Cathy) Creighton; Jen’s siblings, other relatives, and many dear friends.

A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery on April 23 at 10:30 a.m. Immediately following, the family will greet guests and celebrate John’s life at Indian Lake Golf Club where a luncheon will be served.

Memorial donations may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church, Manistique Area Schools Scholarship Foundation, CBC, Lake Effects Community Arts Center, or the organization of your choice. The family would like to thank North Woods Home Care and Hospice for their compassionate services and support during John’s illness.
