Michael John Buchanan

ESCANABA — Michael John Buchanan of Escanaba, Mich., age 76, passed away on March 9, 2024, at Christian Park Village. He was born on May 18, 1947, to Clyde and Florence Buchanan.

On June 30, 1973, Mike married Linda Flath. He was a teacher for 37 years, starting his career at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in Manistique, Mich. For 23 years, Mike taught seventh and eighth grades until they closed. He continued teaching at Big Bay de Noc School in Garden for 14 years until his retirement in 2007. Mike was well respected and loved by his students and he was affectionately known as “Mr. B.” Mike was also one of the first teachers in the area to teach Spanish to other schools via a television system.

During the summer vacation from school, he enjoyed painting houses, which he did for 23 years. Mike enjoyed many hobbies including bowling, golfing, collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia and traveling with his wife. Their travels included many great family vacations with their children to places like Disney World, Washington, D.C., Williamsburg, and several trips out West. After the children grew older, Mike and Linda bought a travel trailer and would enjoy camping frequently. They were also active members of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife Linda, who together enjoyed 50 years of marriage. He also leaves behind his daughters, Mary (Josh) Willis and Christine (John) Peloza; grandchildren, Marissa, Zachary, Hailey and Benjamin Willis, and Isaac and Evan Peloza; and brother, Clyde (Dawn) Buchanan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Relatives and friends may call on the family during a time of visitation from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 15, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 615 30th Street South, Escanaba, MI 49829. The funeral service will be celebrated by Pastor Paul Doletzky at 12:30 p.m. Immediately following the service you are cordially invited to join the family for a time of continued fellowship, food, and refreshments at the church. Mike will be laid to rest at Gardens of Rest Memorial Park, Wells, Mich.
