Richard Raymond Anderson
ESCANABA — Richard Raymond Anderson, age 85, of Escanaba passed away Monday, February 12, 2024 at the home of his daughter. He was born May 23, 1938 in Calumet, Mich. and was the daughter of Peter and Wilma (Souminen) Anderson. Richard graduated from Dollar Bay High School in 1956 and then sailed on the Great Lakes serving as a fireman on the ore boats. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from October 28, 1962, until he was honorably discharged on November 14, 1967. Richard Anderson married the former Rita M. Reed on February 9, 1962 in Calumet and she preceded him in death on June 13, 1997. Richard and Rita moved to Escanaba in 1969 and the couple raised three daughters Brenda, Kim, and Gail. Richard was employed at Harnishfeger Corporation in Escanaba and later working at Mead Paper Company, as a pipefitter, until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the Escanaba Amvets, Ford River Lions Club and the L’Anse Eagles Club. He enjoyed playing cards, telling stories, camping, fishing, hunting, and going to his camp in Nisula, MI – “Camp Nuttin”.
Richard is survived by daughters, Brenda Chouinard of Riverland and Kim Carlson of Wells; son-in-law, Jay Anderson of Green Bay; 11 grandchildren, Mark Chouinard, Richard Chouinard, Matthew Chouinard, Kyle Chouinard, Nicole Kempsell, Simon Chouinard, Kasey Demers Courtney Lefleur, Brody Carlson Amanda Mogusar and Lucas Anderson; 22 great-grandchildren; brothers, Harold “Spike” (Lois) Anderson of Green Bay, Wis. and Arthur (Lois) Anderson of L’Anse, Mich., sister Florence (John) Lewis of Saginaw, Mich. and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by daughter Gail, sons-in-law, Daniel Chouinard and Timothy Carlson; brothers, Elmer and Roger Anderson; and sisters, Leona Anderson and Beatrice Wilhem.
Visitation will be held from noon to 1:45 p.m. Saturday, February 17, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Delta County veteran’s services being assisted by the United States Army National Guard will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services celebrating the life of Richard Anderson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Brad Cochrane officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the Ludington Room, located at the Anderson Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery.
