William J. Painter

GWINN — William J. Painter, age 84, of Gwinn, Mich., passed away Tuesday December 26, 2023, at his home in Gwinn surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 22, 1939 in McMillian, Mich. and was the son of Lyle Jackson and Muriel (Ney) Painter. Bill graduated from Newberry High School in 1957. He married the former Kathey Sue Gunton on December 8, 1978, and the couple shared 45 years of marriage together. Bill was self-employed as a sawyer, working in the woods in Upper and Lower Michigan. He also was a gifted ceramic title setter until his retirement. Bill and Kathey moved to Gwinn in 1993. Bill was an AA member for over 50 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and the outdoors was Bill’s Church.

Bill is survived by his wife, Kathey; children, Jean (Paul) Alcott of Gwinn, Mich., Debra Ullmark of Kalamazoo, Mich., Andrew (Helen) Painter of Mazomanie, Wis., Amelia Moore of Leesburg, Fla., Jeff (Nola) Mark of Chesaning, Mich. and Steve (Terrie) Mark of Mooresville, N.C.; many grand-, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Rick (Leta) Painter of Beaverton, Mich. and James Painter of Manistique, Mich.; sister, Janet Brennen of Ann Arbor, Mich. and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Willamina Painter.

Private family celebration of life services will be held at a later date. Memorials can be directed to the Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice in William’s name.
