William E. ‘Bill’ Weissert
ESCANABA — William E. “Bill” Weissert, 76, of Escanaba, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay.
He was born on March 13, 1947, in Daggett, Mich., son to Earl W. “Sonny” and Helen M. (Bouty) Weissert. Bill graduated from North Central School in 1965. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War. When honorably discharged, he continued his education at Northern Michigan University. On August 11, 1991, Bill married Victoria “Vickie” Zaharias at their camp in Powers.
For nearly 50 years Bill was an insurance agent operating Bill Weissert Insurance agency, located in Escanaba. He recently retired, proudly selling the business to his son-in-law and daughter, Jerry and Erin DeGrave.
In May of 2004 Bill had a successful lung transplant, which gave him nearly twenty more years to spend with his family. His transplant team remarked that he lived a phenomenal length of time for a lung transplant recipient. Bill enjoyed riding motorcycle with Vickie during the summer and on their trips south during the winters. Fishing, hunting and being at camp were some of his other favorite things, but his wife, children, and grandchildren were his greatest joy.
He is survived by his wife, Vickie of Escanaba; five children, Stephanie (Matt) McGlothlin, William S. (Schar) Weissert, Chad Weissert, Robert Hervert, and Erin (Jerry) DeGrave; grandchildren, Kimberly, Matt, Colten, Cora, Cari, Nicole, Bella, Aniela, Angela, and expecting baby Gabriella soon; siblings, Peggy Klapper and Robert Weissert; and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents. Also, his sister, Bonnie Milligan passed just two days prior on December 19, 2023.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 4th from 3:45-4:45 p.m. (Eastern Time) at the Wilson Seventh Day Adventist Church. Military honors will take place at 4:45 p.m., with the memorial service and meal to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bill’s name may be made to the Escanaba Seventh Day Adventist Food Pantry, as he was a member of the Escanaba Seventh Day Adventist Church. A message of condolence may be directed to the family by visiting www.crawfordfuneralhomes.net.
