Maria J. Leach

ESCANABA — Maria J. Leach, age 59, of Escanaba passed away Saturday, November 25, 2023, at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. She was born October 22, 1964, in Escanaba and was the daughter of John and Judith (Geb) Lippens. Maria graduated from Escanaba High School in 1985. She married David Wendt on November 11, 1990, in Escanaba. Maria later married Robert Lee Leach in 2010 and he preceded her in death in 2013. She was employed by the Department of Natural Resources, later working in the fast food industry and then as a nurse’s aide in home health care until her retirement. Maria enjoyed Special Olympics, competing in bowling and swimming, going to the U.P. State Fair and attending the stock car racing. She loved animals and enjoyed camping, fishing and playing bingo. Maria was a member of the Salvation Army in Escanaba.

Maria is survived by sons, John Robert Wiegers of Muskegon, Mich., Samuel David Wiegers of Muskego, Mich.; grandson, Tavyn John Earl Wiegers of Muskegon, Mich.; sister, Wendy Lippens of Pellston, Mich.; father, John (Laurie) Lippens Ford River, Mich.; many stepchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother, Judy Lippens; and husband, Bob. Maria was preceded in death by her aunt Janet Nelson.

Visitation and celebration of life services will be held in the spring of 2024 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba with Captain Doug Winters officiating.
