Grace Esther Krause

HYDE — Grace Esther Krause of rural Hyde passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the age of 97. Most recently, she resided at the Bishop Noa Home where she received excellent care. She was born in Abrams, Wisconsin, on April 3, 1926, to Alex and Florence (Knowles) Heider.

Grace was raised on a farm in rural Abrams where she attended Knowles School graduating from eighth grade. She moved to the Ford River area where she met, Louis Krause, “the boy next door.” With the war looming, the two decided to get married. With her parent’s permission, plans were made to get married on Dec. 8, 1941. Upon arriving at the rectory, they learned that Pearl Harbor had been attacked and the country was at war. They married that day and went on to have 68 years together.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hyde and of the Ladies’ Aid Society serving as the funeral meal coordinator for many years. Her special dish was always German potato salad.

Over their married life, Grace and Louis provide a home for many people. Some stayed a short time, and others, like her father-in-law, resided with them for 25 years.

Grace was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed any, and all, types of sewing – never using a pattern. She always said, “If I can visualize it, I can make it. You can do anything if you want to bad enough.” She enjoyed cooking, baking, and canning. Being a typical farmer’s wife, she helped with all the farm chores. She, also, made pallets with her husband in their later years. During that time, they always went to Burger King for lunch.

Grace’s survivors include her children Alyce (Robert) Jacobson, Sharon (Lionel) Herioux, Linda (David) Robinson, Thomas (Kerri) Krause, and Douglas (Tina) Krause; her grandchildren, Robert, Barbara, Scott, Jodi, Rebecca, Michelle, Patti, MaryBeth, Cissie, John, Jill, Amy, Tom Jr., Lisa, and Alex; 30 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, as well as, numerous nieces and nephews.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, in 2010; parents, Alex and Florence Heider; an infant son in 1943, daughter-in-law, Kim Tryan Krause, and great-grandson, Roman, in 2022. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret, Marian, Edna, and Carol; and brothers, Harold, Jay, and Russel.

Louis and Grace were both baptized, confirmed, married, and now buried from St. Paul’s Church.

Visitation will be on Friday, December 29 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home, 302 S. 13th St., Escanaba. The funeral services will follow at noon at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hyde with Pastor Ronald Zindler officiating. Burial will take place in West Ford River Cemetery. A gathering will follow at the Highland Golf Club.
