Victor James Martin

BARK RIVER — Victor James Martin, age 76, of Fairbanks, Alaska, passed away of a heart attack on May 20, 2023.

Victor was born Dec. 13, 1946 in Escanaba, Mich., the son of Herman and Sophie Martin.

He attended and graduated from the Michigan School for the Deaf in 1964 in Flint, Mich.

He worked for Seely manufacturing Co. in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Then he relocated to Fairbanks, Alaska, and taught sign language at the University of Alaska. He also worked for the labor union.

He was very active in the community for the deaf.

He received the first lady’s volunteer award for his continued work with the deaf community.

He liked to travel and take photos of everything.

He is survived by sons, Daniel Martin and Dennis Martin, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandsons; brother, John Martin, of Fairbanks, Alaska; sisters, Joyce Lippens of Bark River, Mich., and Mary Caliri, of Elmhurst, Ill.

In addition to his parents, Victor is preceded in death by sister, Carol Yagodzinski.

A private burial took place at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Perronville, Mich.
